Bonnie Garner
For many years until Title IX came into effect, there were not many opportunities for girls in high school athletics.

Bonnie Garner missed many of those opportunities as a player, but she took advantage of them as a coach.

Bonnie is a 1965 graduate of Claysburg High School and a 1969 graduate of Towson University, where she received a BS Degree in Health and Physical Education. She was hired by Everett Area School District following graduation.

Garner became the cheerleading advisor, as this was the only option for female students. After Title IX was passed, she started programs for girls basketball, softball, and volleyball at Everett.

She was successful as a coach in all 3 sports.

In 3 years as the girls’ basketball coach ,she compiled a 22-9 record, including a 9-1 record in 1973, the inaugural year for the program.

She was the softball coach from 1974 to 1979, garnering a 31-25 record over that time.

Garner also started the volleyball program in 1976. Her teams captured District 5 titles in the first 3 years of the program. The 1976 and 1977 teams were undefeated in the regular season and are both Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame inductees this year as well.

Those teams won 23 consecutive matches against District 5 opponents.

Her career volleyball record at 40-9.

She also made history as the first woman in Bedford County to become an assistant athletic director.

Following her tenure at Everett, she received her license in Nuclear Medicine and worked at Mercy Medical Center with cancer patients in Baltimore. She currently resides in Baltimore.
